WE met to discuss how Mum was to die. Not that we were
planning her murder, or even euthanasia, although she has been begging me for at least three years to kill her.
If I legally could, I would. I think.
My once proud, strong mother is a sad shell of herself with neither the will nor strength for over a year to get out of bed unaided, and she has been reduced to wearing adult diapers.
Nothing prepares you for the impact of your mother lying in her own faeces or urine, waiting for busy staff to change her, or finding her sitting on the toilet, crying over the indignity while staff retrieve fresh sheets.
She may not remember what
day it is but she’s very clear on one thing—she wants to die, and she’s said so daily, long before going into care.
During a recent stay in Fremantle Hospital I jokingly put my hands around her throat, and she sighed thank you” and smiled so sweetly that I cried.
PalliativeThat hospital stay was the
beginning of the end for my 88-year-old mother, and I doubt she’ll be with us by Christmas,

hence the discussion about a palliative care plan for her residential care home.
Mum has been speaking in whispers recently, but when asked if she wanted resuscitation or hospital care her eyes ashed with some of her old fire for a moment, she reared back, and said, firmly and loudly, good God! No!”.
Don’t get old,” she’s been telling me for years, and having seen first-hand the future of aged care, maybe the Mexican co*cktail nembutal should be part of my drinks cabinet.
Talk to nursing home staff and you’ll find most say they don’t plan on getting old, as they wade through the demeaning and often smelly reality of aged care in a system of staff shortages, especially in this most

DONNA gave birth to her son on the street a year ago. Now in foster care with his four siblings, the eldest 16, they all see each other when they can.
“I left a toxic relationship and ended up on the streets about two years ago,” Donna explains, her life’s belongings squeezed into a trolley topped by her mattress. nable to find or afford decent” accommodation in Fremantle, the 43-year-old says living on the street and finding shelter where she can has made her a better person.
“It has made me harder,” she says, holding hands with partner Stewart whose trolley is parked next to hers opposite St Patrick’s where they take showers and are fed. “I’ve discovered that having lost it all, you gain everything.”
Donna says most “streeties” knew each other, meeting often in parks to talk and to share food. But she says people with mental illness should not have to fend for themselves.
“To live out here is costly, you don’t have the rental utilities nor money to buy decent food
or shoes,” she explains, having glued the soles of her uggboots to last a little longer.
“It’s bloody hard, we have good days and bad days, we cry, we laugh and we get frustrated about being forgotten about.” Homelessness Australia says more than 9500 people are homeless every night in WA.
Nearly two years on a waiting list, Donna says people can be generous but others challenge her about her situation: one woman told her she did not look hungry. Donna replied: “What does hungry look like?” The woman returned and apologised, giving her $10.
Donna says she hopes to one
day be able to sit around a table with her family, enjoying a meal and laughing together.
Outside Red Dot, Tarelle, 19, had collected about $2 in coins by 10am; her aim is to reach $150 to buy food for herself, her dog and roommate. She says she receives no welfare because she has no address.
“We’re living in a six-man tent on a vacant property in Maddington,” she says, her right foot suffering severe burns after she spilled hot water trying to prepare dinner.
Tarelle’s cardboard sign says she needs money to buy food and medicine for her bipolar disorder.
• From page 1unglamorous field of nursing, and all while the population inexorably ages.
Fremantle Hospital’s V6 is where the aged usually end up when very ill and Mum’s 10-day stay, with a staph infection, was one of frustration as staff were told repeatedly by me and others that Mum had trouble eating due to poor teeth and a sore mouth.
On day one she was served a pork chop for lunch. Even I had trouble cutting it. The next day it was beef stew, big chunks of meat. She couldn’t even manage the gravy, but did eat a little of the custard I gently spooned into her mouth.
The staph infection had come through in ammation of Mum’s legs, and our family joked blackly the patient’s legs were fine, but the patient died.
Meals untouchedDespite Mum being unable
to sit up unaided, or lift a fork to her mouth, her meals were left on her tray, out of reach.
We wondered why no-one seemed to notice that for well over a week, almost untouched plates were being removed. These concerns were raised.
Mum had asked for orange juice and it was served—but sealed, and left out of reach. It may as well have been in the fridge or on the moon.
I shudder to think how thirsty she was, as I held a straw to her mouth. I saw little evidence of staff slaking her thirst.
Nursing staff were polite and friendly and no doubt did what was needed, but with more pressing duties they seemed uninterested with my concerns: I doubt I’m the first family member who’s asked that they pay more attention; perhaps they’ve just switched off.
After a week and following a fiery phone conversation with the nurse coordinator, I arrived to find a nurse feeding Mum. She protested feebly as a rubbery piece of luke-warm omelette was shoved at her mouth.
Her cries of “Oh Jenny, don’t leave me!” cut to my quick.
“She can’t chew—she needs protein drinks, not solid food,” I said to the feeder, this time through gritted teeth.
On day 10 a nurse finally had a look at Mum’s mouth and discovered what we had already found, and which we had been telling them about—an angry, raw-red tongue, covered in white thrush pustules.
“This didn’t get that bad in 24
hours,” my husband, formerly a nurse, said in shock.
The most common side-effect of antibiotics is thrush, and Mum was on mega doses. It was clear no-one had thought about her oral hygiene in the 10 days she’d spent in V6. I’m at a loss to fathom why no-one noticed the state of her mouth.
Prestigious When Fiona Stanley opens,
Fremantle’s more prestigious sections such as its heart unit will move, and aged care will be one of its main focuses.
Let’s hope it gets a better handle on the needs of the elderly, and employs better communication between all levels of staff and family members when it does.
In a letter to the Herald last week a disgruntled staff member laments what’s going on at the hospital at an administrative level. “The place is in an absolute shambles and needs a good shake up,” the writer says.
Mum’s back at her home now, where the thrush is responding to treatment and she is managing to eat soft food, and drink plenty of uids ably assisted by staff.
She’s adamant she’s not going back to Fremantle Hospital.

SHIFTING Bibra Lake into the City of Melville will cost local roads programs $45 million over the next 10 years, co*ckburn city council has warned.
It adds its ratepayers will also have to cough up another $15 million to $30 million to replace a freehold depot in the suburb, because its ownership will transfer to Melville.
The warnings come as co*ckburn prepares to tell the WA local government advisory board it wants draft boundaries with Fremantle and Melville shifted, to reclaim 11,151 of 28,769 residents proposed to “move” into the neighbouring cities.
The board’s draft recommendation sees co*ckburn/Kwinana losing North Coogee, Hamilton Hill, Coolbellup, North Lake and Bibra Lake to a bigger Fremantle and a revised Melville. co*ckburn’s reply acknowledges the virtual amalgamation with
• Herald photographer Matthew Dwyer was out and about when he came across the very friendly Miki and his human pal Choi hanging out in Kings Square. Dwyer reckons the big budgie’s got a wicked
sense of humour, waiting patiently till the photograph had been set up before hopping onto the lens for a gander.
Kwinana but wants the northern boundary shifted to the Roe Highway road reserve.
“That is, North Lake, Coolbellup and Leeming and Jandakot airport (including Jandakot city) being transferred to the City of Melville and North Hamilton Hill (north of Roe reserve) and North Coogee (to McTaggart Cove) being transferred to Fremantle.”
“This outcome is a better alternative than the board’s intended recommendation to transfer 28,769 residents,” the council’s submission will state.
The o cers’ recommendation stressed “time is of the essence” to submit the “better” model before the advisory board’s August 14 deadline.
co*ckburn notes the cost of amalgamation has been pencilled in at $7.5 million, “but this cost is likely to be higher due to the greater complexity associated with a northern boundary change”.
co*ckburn also states Walgab’s proposal dramatically impacts on future-proofing, with the operating surplus set
to fall from $8.96 million to $3.27 million in 2014/15. “This stymies the ability of a high growth local government to not only construct new assets, but replace or upgrade old infrastructure.
“Projects will either be delayed, debt-funded or scrapped.
“Melville and Fremantle are not growth local governments and as such are not still building new roads, civic or community assets.
“Melville already runs an extensive operating surplus, therefore providing them with more industrial rating income means they will only become substantially wealthier at the expense of ratepayers of co*ckburn/Kwinana.”

Squawking hypocrisyI READ with fond memories of my own childhood holidays to country farms while growing up in Sydney about an initiative to send WA city kids out to country farms for a week to learn about where food comes from.
What a great idea. It is on trial in WA and NSW, supported by Rabobank and presumably with the support of the WA department of education.
I couldn’t believe the hypocrisy when I read the front page story of my local Herald (“Fowl fencing”, July 26, 2014).
I wondered how the “liability-shy shiny bums in East Perth” are happy to support farm placements (BTW good on them) yet thought a city vegie patch and a few chooks was a risk too great. I’m sure the $8500 fence bill could go a long way to supporting the country student placement program.
Peter SpencerWray Ave, Fremantle
Unsustainable surrenderWHEN did Fremantle council give up on sustainability?
I attended the council community information evening July 29 for what was effectively an incinerator proposal somewhere in Kwinana to sustainably incinerate Fremantle’s domestic waste without spreading toxic particulates and ash over the neighbourhood!
Apparently, this is now part of the Fremantle council sustainability agenda—sustainably out of sight.
Double-faultIT seems our metropolitan netball teams are going to get hit with a double whammy.
Not only has fire destroyed their new facility in Jolimont, the Fremantle players are soon to have nearly all their parking removed alongside the Gibson Park courts as the government pushes ahead with its expensive folly of the ill-conceived Perth Freight Link.
While a practical and viable alternative is available to solve the increasing Fremantle container terminal road and rail freight problem and our long term transport needs in that region, it appears no politician is prepared to take a step back and, as our emperor has recently insisted “Have a look at the bigger picture”.
Daryl BinningNorton Ridge, Winthrop
Pick on the pollies firstANDREW FORREST’S idea of controlling how welfare recipients spend their welfare is not new, but has merit.
Before we get stuck into welfare recipients, how about a policy for politicians to control how they blow taxpayers’ money on themselves and unwanted developments and monuments to themselves. Like Elizabeth Quay, sports stadiums, heavy freight roads, forced council amalgamations, overseas junkets and no doubt excessive pay rises.
Brad CapesProspero Cres, Coolbellup
One person’s trash...ARE there always two ways of looking at things?
P Fletcher (Herald letters, August 2, 2014) bewails the “desperadoes” who removed his/her “unrepairable, incomplete or damaged … junk”. Apparently these would have recouped council pickup costs by the sale of recyclable materials, whereas the desperadoes sell them to unsuspecting buyers.
We, on the other hand are delighted to see our rejects collected by those who can find a genuine use for them either as is or by repairing them—that is true recycling.
I can not speak for co*ckburn but in Fremantle the goods/junk are collected by front end loaders—thus minimising any likelihood of recovery/recyclability. Similarly, we have been happy to collect materials for our outdoors activities including cubby houses, cable reels [makes fabulous table] and good chairs with daggy covers.
In turn, collectors have taken old CGI [too little for scrap metal collectors], a working fridge [that needed all replacement shelves, costing more than the value of the fridge], non-working electrical tools someone else can fix them , etc. Of
more concern to me are the vandals who just demolish items and leave them for collection/dumping by council.
Jim MeckelburgDavies St, Beaconsfield
No strategy based on reuse, recycle, reimagine, reconstruct, redesign. Nope. Too hard. No strategy to push hard for a container deposit system in WA to link with South Australia. No strategy to extend the principle of producer responsibility to cover electronic waste including the first wave of solar panels (yes, you can!).
No requirement for a genuine sustainability assessment on incineration to consider the embedded energy of waste versus the calorific value. No consideration of resource e ciency and social impacts.
Not even a real community engagement strategy to facilitate a social licence to operate. No ability for the community to provide input on suitable technology, waste management priorities, site selection criteria for new treatment plants.
All in all, it would appear that in Fremantle council, sustainability is now the new Mickey Mouse…but what cute ears!

herald think ing allow edWALKING into the Fly
by Night Musicians’ Club back in 1987
after a busking session opposite Old Papa’s and maybe a sneaky three bean at Gino’s, I was overwhelmed by the space but never realised the profound in uence the place would have on my life as a working musician.
Over the next 10 years it would be here that I learnt valuable performance skills, live audio engineering (thanks Simon T) and even picked up some bar and cleaning work to see me through. The Fly is far more than a place you go to see great live music: it has a number of core objectives and functions embedded in its constitution as an organisation that make it an incredibly valuable asset for the people of Fremantle and WA, with huge potential for the future. These objectives are:
• provide a venue for musicians, performers and community groups for meetings, workshops, rehearsals and programs; facilitate where possible workshops to assist musicians and performers to plan, produce, promote, market and present performances both in the club venue and elsewhere; actively encourage equal opportunity and access to musical and related arts activities; develop programs and workshops for the local community; liaise with other groups and individuals involved in music and other arts activities; assist community groups with
applications for funding or sponsorship in order to facilitate the use of the club venue; balance commercial and non-commercial activities to ensure the continued existence of the club for the benefit of community and developing musicians and artists.
Its core value and purpose is to nurture/support the performing arts in Fremantle and WA. That is to say, it is there to support our local performing arts industry—the people who live and work here in Fremantle in an increasingly di cult industry but for whom without Fremantle would be a lot less inspiring place to live or visit.
The Fly has a very healthy core business which enables it to pay its bills. In the past few years it has implemented innovative processes that increase revenue.
A balancing act the Fly must manage is incorporating its values and objectives into its core business. That is, remaining financially independent while supporting activities that may lose revenue—under-18 events, local CD launches, local school fundraisers, poetry nights, etc.
Last November the Fly lost the minimal funding it received from the WA government, a rent
subsidy that had gone straight to the National Trust. Because the Fly has a strong core business, this did not affect its viability.
Now, the National Trust wants commercial rents from a state government building it manages on behalf of the state government. Again, the Fly can weather these cost rises but this will be at a cost to community access and cultural development.
I would not see this as an internal structural problem for the Fly but rather a lack of vision and value from the state government.
If it values the objectives the Fly has for cultural development and the community, and it is not costing it any money, why is it jeopardising these objectives by insisting on more money?

Tragic, but no accidentTHE deaths of 298 people aboard the Malaysian Airlines ight MH17 is both catastrophic and tragic. It cannot be regarded as an “unfortunate accident” as was the case when an Iranian airline was destroyed by a missile fired from a S warship in 1988.
The statement from the S president Mr Obama that
the downing of MH17 was a “mistake” by ill-trained rebels continues to make political capital out of this tragedy. The
ight from Amsterdam which ended in tragedy had its usual
ight path altered at a very late stage such that it crossed the area where there was, and still is, fierce con ict. This alteration could not have been as a result of an instruction from either the people of the Donetsk region, nor for that matter, Russia. And it could not have been from the
Malaysian airline itself. The source of this decision needs to be completely clarified. This has not been helped by the removal of the conversations between air tra c control in Kiev and the pilot of the stricken airline before international experts could assess the recordings.
Why did Kiev authorities remove the recordings from the control tower which had ordered the change in both the ight path and the height the airline was travelling, from 35,000 feet to 32,000 feet? The Malaysian airline has no element of blame for this tragedy and certainly had nothing whatever to gain. Sixty of its aviation experts have now been held up in Kiev for three days waiting to proceed to the crash site. Malaysian o cials have now independently arrived in Donetsk and have received most of the human remains and the “black box” recorders from the stricken aircraft. The Kiev authorities have not been prepared to declare a cease-fire in the area of the crash which, prior to the downing of the
ight, had been the site of very intense bombing by its air force.
Alexander Borodai, self-
proclaimed prime minister of what he calls the Donetsk Peoples
epublic, called for a ceasefire to allow international experts to examine the site. He makes the point that with delay the whole crash site degrades, making any conclusions more di cult. He had nothing to gain and everything to lose by this and has wanted the arrival of the international experts.
There are 14 observers from ISCE who were there within 48 hours of the tragedy. They have been provided with accommodation and security in this war zone by the so-called DPR. Our government has rushed to judgement on this tragedy, candidly blaming Russia and at the same timing joining the press in demonising Vladimir Putin. No evidence has been provided about Russia’s culpability in this tragedy. Neither Russia nor indeed Mr Putin have anything to gain in being a party to downing air ight MH17.

ROTTNEST ISLAND is losing its only post box.
From Monday September 8 islanders will have to catch a ferry into Fremantle every time they want to check their mail.
And they must make the trip at least once every 30 days or the mail gets returned to sender.
Jennifer Nolan has lived on Rotto since starting work at the general store in February and says the prospect of an hour’s trip just to check for mail is unthinkable.
“It is unacceptable for the residents, whether temporary or transient, to be unable to mail or receive any post,” says Ms Nolan, who’d just been given the go-ahead by her boss to start a petition when the Chook called.
I think it will be a poor re ection on Western Australia and Australia if an overseas tourist is not able to mail a postcard to their family from one of our favourite holiday destinations,” she says.
“It is also unacceptable that Australia Post has tried to keep this a secret.”
ottnest Island Authority staff have been clearing the post box daily since the local post o ce closed in 200 , dropping the mail off in Fremantle.
RIA workers have also collected incoming mail, with Rotto traders and residents drifting in to pick it up at their leisure.
• Rotto residents ennifer olan and amie aere u are furrious and really
sad ustralia Post is removing t e island s only post box
It’s a free, common-sense service that works well and that’s clearly upset senior bureaucrats at Australia Post.
The box-tickers are demanding the RIA sign up (pay the fee) to become an authorised agent, otherwise it’s too risky to keep allowing it to collect mail in case
something goes wrong and someone complains.
Australia Post bugle Jenni Bolton concedes there hasn’t been a single complaint about the RIA’s dolphin express in six years.
She was stumped when the Chook queried Australia Post’s claim the box must be removed because it’s “no longer economically viable”, given the RIA does everything gratis and it’ll cost money to take out.
Instead, she offered up endless repetitions of how only authorised staff and agents are allowed to touch mail and how no-one on the island is interested in signing up (paying the fee).
Questions about any potential for a memorandum-of-understanding or other agreements less onerous than becoming an agency met the same “computer says no” response.
RIA bugle Penni Fletcher-Hughes says the RIA will now set up a “mail receptacle” at the Rotto visitor’s centre for all residents and visitors (“out tray”) and it will lease a second post o ce box for its staff so they’ll still get their letters. But they’ll have to travel to Fremantle to get parcels.
No such luck for private enterprise traders and employees on the island.
“Australia Post will no longer provide a bulk mail delivery to the island and individual businesses and residents will have to make their own arrangements for receiving their mail.”

LIBERAL MLC Phil Edman has told Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren she “should be ashamed” for seeking details about his overseas trip in April, taken at public expense.
Mr Edman was amongst five M Cs who used their imprest accounts to travel to Tokyo to view waste-to-energy facilities.
“All the delegates I mentioned have wives who they left at home alone in order to attend this tour, and in some cases they have young children,” Mr Edman thundered at Ms MacLaren when she sought details.
“I do not think it is wise for anybody in this place to expose the fact that a delegation is about to go on international travel when their kids and wives will be left at home. Lynn MacLaren should be ashamed.
“That is the reason none of us wanted to talk to the media about our trip and why none of us were prepared to expose that in this house.”
DisappointedMs MacLaren says she’s disappointed her
attempt to promote transparency had led to personal attacks.
These members have to file imprest statements so we should know soon,” she says. “This was not an o cial government visit, it was members travelling together.”
The M Cs’ uno cial” trip included mayors and council delegates whose expenses were paid for by their councils. It coincided with a delegation led by Phoenix Energy Australia, which plans to build a new incinerator in Kwinana, funded by local councils.
Labor MLC Kate Doust told parliament she was shocked by the level of anger displayed by Mr Edman and Peter Katsambanis, another of the group of five.
“Perhaps these individuals doth protest too much, and I wonder why,” Ms Doust mused, adding anyone had the right to ask who was footing the bill for Members’ travel.
She accused the Liberal MLCs of employing intimidation and bullying to get Ms MacLaren to

Katsambanis accused Ms MacLaren of spinning “half-baked conspiracy theories” and called on her to apologise.
Mr Edman told parliament, “it was not rocket science to have waste-to-energy plants in WA”. He said there were plants so clean in Tokyo “the apanese asked us take our shoes off that was at

gourmet catering. This much loved valley cafe is open 7 days a week, which is good news, because the
Sunday roast is a must try!
cafelumos offers a full breakfast and lunch menu with loads of tempting items, from the traditional to
modern with a twist. Start the day by fuelling up with the lumos universe - free range eggs poached or
scrambled, bacon, chipolatas, hash browns, grilled tomato, home made baked beans, field mushroom,
english spinach & toast. If something lighter is more your style, choices include bircher muesli or fruit toast.
cafelumos also has plenty of yummy vegetarian and gluten free options available.
“We cater for those with food intolerances and have increased our raw, vegan and gluten free range,” said
owner Leon.
Located right next door to the cafe, you’ll find the larder - a treasure trove of gourmet grocery products
sourced mainly from local suppliers. The range includes olive oil, preserves, teas, coffee and chocolate.
To take home there’s healthy prepared meals, fresh salads, wraps and panini. cafelumos also stocks an
extensive selection of quality gifts ideal for any occasion.
Leon sees the larder as a natural extension of cafelumos “We always wanted to offer customers more by
opening a deli side to the business. We have the cafe, the catering and now we have the larder too,” he
explained.
It’s a great concept, offering customers more choice and convenience. So whether you’re meeting
friends for coffee, enjoying a lazy weekend brekky, organising catering for a function, or grabbing

Whilst we already have a well known established brand in Fremantle, the response was overwhelming after our What’s New advertising in the Herald.
We advertised in February to advise customers that we had expanded our café and that new and exciting product lines were available from our larder and giftstore.
This had an instant effect from not only hundreds of new customers but amongst our regulars too.
We now use this forum as a regular part of our marketing and advertising plan.

PARISHIONERS in Attadale have asked Melville council to delay an application to build a new church at St Joseph Pignatelli.
Signed by 50 residents and five non-residents the petition will be considered by council later this month, “pending further disclosure of information”.
Parishioner of 30 years Graham Mahony says Attadale does not need a new $4 million church when the existing building struggles to fill pews.
“A majority of people don’t go to church these days,” he told the Herald, adding parishioners can use the Santa Maria chapel.
Dr Mahony says many petitioners are parishioners concerned about the lack of consultation on a, “new church with o ces and meeting rooms, parking, a columbarium and bell tower”.
by CARMELO AMALFI
FIRST the friendly visit. Then the scolding letter.
Melville mayor Russell Aubrey didn’t take kindly to the public complaint from Attadale pensioner Dawn Davies (right) about the 30 per cent kick in her council rates (“Seniors fume over rates hike,” Melville City Herald, August 2, 2014).
Mr Aubrey wrote to Ms Davies to express his disappointment in the criticisms she’d reported to Herald readers.
Delivered by hand, the letter asks Ms Davies to retract her comments and correct “the public record” by stating in writing that her rates had dropped.
Ms Davies, who used to own the iconic Oyster Beds restaurant, says the mayor can write his own letter rather than waste time questioning her integrity.
In his letter, Cr Aubrey agreed her general rates charge had increased by $699.10, but says the Herald fails to mention, “the decreases that are also re ected on your rate notice”.
His calculations include the removal of the rubbish collection charge, “a saving of $403.50” and an increase in the general rates rebate, “a saving of $349.55”.
“In total, your account shows a total decrease of $42.25,” he concludes.
“I’m sure as an honest resident you would wish to correct the public record by writing a letter to the press, re ecting the reduction in rates and convivially open and friendly discussions we had.”
Rubbish, Ms Davies says, pointing out the increases on her rates statements for 2013 and 2014.
“The waste collection charge hasn’t been removed, it’s still in my rates. The rebate for general rates has nothing to do with what the rates are.”
Mr Aubrey told Ms Davies “in the interest of honesty and integrity” she should correct the record, and he even did a bit of spruiking for our Rupert Murdoch-owned rival paper.
“It would be appropriate to put it into both local papers so the city does not have to suffer criticism in a year in which we have worked hard to reduce your rate burden,” he said.
Mayor scolds pensioner
He says neither the columbarium (for storage of cremated remains) nor the bell tower were included in the application people could comment on up to July 25.
Dr Mahony adds a tra c management plan to cope with vehicles using Wichmann Road, Attadale’s main thoroughfare, was also submitted after the consultation deadline.
Parish priest Sean Fernandez says supportive parishioners have raised $2.75 million, and construction is expected to start early next year.
The land on which the existing church was built as a hall in 1955 includes Mel Maria Catholic primary school and kindy and the tennis club off Wichmann oad.
The St Joseph Pignatelli tennis club has used this land without charge: “The tennis courts serving the wider community for 50 years are being demolished to make way for the new church and the wider community
registers its disappointment,” Dr Mahony says.
More than 60 members of the club wrote to the Herald saying the courts generate, “much better outcomes for a larger number of people than a new church”.
Dr Mahony says the parish does not have the money to build the new church and Perth archbishop Timothy Costelloe is chipping in a $500,000 “soft loan”.
“At the end of the day, we have to repay that money,” he says.
Asked whether it was a di cult decision to take on the Church, Dr Mahony replies, “God will be my judge on that”.
Father Sean says most people who use the six courts are not local parishioners and do not live in the area.
The club has declined his offer to keep two courts and offers of weekend access to nearby Santa Maria College’s six.

Big celebrations are planned August under the banner #FestivaloftheBull, a month long ‘thank you’ to friends and diners. Highlight of the celebrations will be the chance to win a ‘Fremantle Escape’ including dinner for two at Char Char Bull plus an overnight stay in a State Room at the new Hougoumont Hotel in Fremantle.

As a self-publisher of children’s books, Wendy Binks is a rarity.
A best-selling book in Australia, Germany and the UK is categorised by having sold over 10,000 copies. Wendy’s first book ‘Where’s Stripey?’, has sold over 75,000 copies to date, and her others are almost as successful.
So why would Wendy change tack and illustrate a book for a mainstream publisher? (in this case Scholastic).
Although the potential financial rewards for self-publishing are far greater, it is a lonely business. Wendy has for some time thought she would like to create a book through a mainstream publisher, not only to see what it was like, but to get that extra support, and professional expertise.
“You are more likely to be pushed outside your comfort zone by someone else, and thus the potential for learning is greater. Illustrating this book was very different, with far less control, and my first ever deadlines! But has been a great experience, and I am now illustrating a second book with Scholastic called ‘Hush little possum’. I will still be self-publishing as well, as I believe the 2
complement each other.” Wendy said. The Perth Voice has 10 signed copies of
’10 Clumsy Emus’ to give away.Wendy is also giving her fans the chance
to win a limited edition print valued at $350 from both her stores in Fremantle, after 9th August. Wendy will also be at the Fremantle Markets signing books on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th August, with lots of give-aways for kids. For more information visit www.wendybinks.com.
At the height of the 1960s, more than 16,000 British babies were adopted – many against the will of their birth mothers. Be My Baby tells the story of four girls each faced with the daunting prospect of losing their baby to forced adoption who find solace in one another and by singing the songs from the era.
Written by Amanda Whittington, one of Britain’s most popular playwrights and writer of the Harbour Theatre smash hits Ladies Day and Ladies Down Under, this will be Harbour Theatre’s second production in their new premises at Camelot in Mosman Park.
Be My Baby also features girl-group Toni and the Oltonettes, who will provide live accompaniment. Playing and singing
Be My Baby
the songs of the era, the group will play a very important part in this production, taking audiences on a trip down memory lane with their renditions of the songs made famous by The Ronettes, The Dixie-Cups, The Shangri-La’s and The Supremes to name a few.
Be My Baby plays at Harbour Theatre @ Camelot, 16 Lochee Street, Mosman Park on 23, 27, 29, 30 August and 3, 4, 5, 6 September at 7.30pm with matinees on 24 & 31 August at 2pm. Enjoy the hospitality of Espresso@Camelot before the show. Doors open at 6.30pm for evening performances and at 1.00pm for matinees.
BOOKINGS on 9255 3336 or www.TAZTix.com.au Tickets $25.50 Full, $23.50 Concession, $20.50 F/T Student or child under 15yo. Harbour Theatre members or friends of MosArts book on 9433 6260 or [emailprotected]

Not all Electricians are the same... most contractors don’t turn up when they say, if at all & when they do they are often rude, unpleasant & leave you with an unfair bill, a messy
house & feeling really annoyed.Hi, I’m Dave from “My Sparky”. I know good, reliable tradies are
hard to fi nd, that’s why I guarantee you’ll have me arrive
on time. I’ll be courteous, respectful & in uniform. I will
only do the best quality work - no short cuts, then clean up after
the job & leave you with a smile. If you’re not happy at the end
you’ll receive $50 cash, on me.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)The rising Moon challenges you to get your feet on the ground. There’s a lot
of bluff in Aries. It disguises the fact that mere gusto doesn’t always deliver results. The Moon invites you to produce. You don’t need do it any other way than your own. Be eff ective - and original.
TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)As you start to sense what the truth of your situation is, so it becomes easier
to let what’s not working go. The key word remains ‘nourishment’. What gives you the feeling that you are soothed and cared for? Whatever it is, go there. Use your imagination. Follow your inklings.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) Mercury is in exactly the same spot as the Sun. You are lit from within by
a solar fl are. Solar fl ares are powerful things. Ride your passion for love, work, play, creativity, for all it’s worth. It’s not often we are blessed with being fi red up. Make proverbial hay while the sun shines.
CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)Though Venus is fi lling you with delight, she’s doing it in a quiet, inward way.
There’s a spring of loveliness at the core of your being that can’t bear to be ignored. Look into the quiet places in your soul - and give yourself time for your eyes to adjust. You will fi nd peace and quiet.
LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)Mercury is right in front of the Sun, in Leo. Mercury is the mischievous
one. His work is to play. Let him peel away the layers of seriousness that have been blinkers on your eyes. Even if it’s a little uncomfortable and disorienting to let seriousness go, take a step into the unknown.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)It may seem like you are laying low and waiting for your time to pounce but the
truth is you are presently possessed by a highly active imagination. It could be that you are imagining outcomes for yourself that would defy other people’s expectations. If they only knew what they are!
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)Peace and harmony need solid foundations and an emotionally
intelligent heart. Life is squeezing you, so you will come to value both these things. On the one hand it’s good to get really grounded – and on the other hand it’s really good to break open the treasure chest of feeling
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)The key word is communication. There is no point whatsoever
keeping what you feel a great big secret, and expecting others to be able to mind-read. That’s a sure fi re path to total frustration. Connect with the people you need to and spill your beans. Your trust will inspire sensitivity.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)As Jupiter makes its way through the fi rst ten degrees of Leo, so life will lead you on
a gentle journey of transformation. You aren’t born to be everybody’s beast of burden. At some point you will have to say ‘no’ to that, and ‘yes’ to yourself. From there your heart can fully emerge.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)The Moon begins her week in Capricorn. Whenever the Moon is around, the
emotional wattage goes up a notch. Pour this into your work. The moment you do, your work will fi ll with the kind of passion that turns it from being a task, to being your play. This is a miraculous change.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)The Moon will be full in Aquarius in the middle of the week. That means a wave of
energy is going to be available for you to ride. If you ride it with awareness, it will deliver creative fruit. If you don’t, it will bring just a little excitement, which will soon fritter away. Be alert to this.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)Authority fi gures are likely to test you this week. They will do so using
the befuddling sword of intellect. It you who give these logic-choppers their authority. You can take that authority away in an instant, simply by knowing, respecting and trusting your feeling. Make a clear choice.
