  • Ciaran Wiseman

WE have reached the quarter-finals of the World Snooker Championship 2024 - and Ronnie O’Sullivan is locked in a thrilling battle with Stuart Bingham.

The Rocket would have been disappointed with his start having gone two frames down in the earlier stages.

But O'Sullivan fought hard to level the scoring with the first session ending 4-4.

World No2 Judd Trump is currently 11-9 behind to Jak Jones in their last-8 clash.

    Allen on exit

Mark Allen has admitted he has "only myself to blame" after his exit from the World Snooker Championship.

The Northern Irishman was beaten by John Higgins despite leading their match 10-7 during Monday's evening session.

Reflecting on the defeat, he said: "It had a bit of everything in there, some good stuff, some not so good.

"I had more than enough chances to win it and credit to John, he does what John does and clears up in the deciding frame.

"I've only myself to blame. I had plenty of chances and just didn't take them."

Ronnie would "love" a LIV-style breakaway snooker tournament

TheRocketsuggested that he would be happy to get a call offering him over half a billion pounds for three-years work.

Ahead of O'Sullivan'sWorld Championship quarter-final against Stuart Bingham, he said: “I would love to see a LIV-style breakaway, gosh.

“I wouldn’t mind getting a phone call saying, ‘Here, do you want 600 million to play for three years?’.

“I’d love that phone call, wouldn’t you?”

O'Sullivan however did refuse to get drawn onto the topic of players being allowed to feature on the WST if they join a rival tour.

He added: “I don’t know. I don’t get involved in it.

“Each to their own. Everyone’s got to do what they’ve got to do. I try not to get involved in it.

“I know what I want from the sport and I know what I’m prepared to do. What I need in return from it.

“And as long as I keep getting that, then I don’t mind playing. But everyone needs to make that up for themselves.

“We all have different positions in the game, different stages of careers. Working more might work for some people, working less might.

“It’s not just always about money. The most important thing is our time. For some people, it’s money. It’s whatever really.”

    Odds

The bookies have largely got this right to this point. Ronnie O'Sullivan and Judd Trump started the competition as favourites, and they remain that way.

The biggest movement has been for Kyren Wilson, who was offered at 28/1 before the tournament and has now come steaming into 9/2 third-favourite. That's no real surprise -- he's arguable played the best and most consistent snooker of anyone.

    • Ronnie O'Sullivan - 5/4
    • Judd Trump - 5/2
    • Kyren Wilson - 9/2
    • David Gilbert - 10/1
    • John Higgins - 11/1
    • Stuart Bingham - 20/1
    • Jak Jones - 33/1
    • Stephen Maguire - 50/1

Rocket theory on snooker lacking a Littler

Ronnie O'Sullivan has revealed why he reckons snooker will struggle to find a teen sensation to ignite the sporting world like Luke Littler in darts.

The Rocket has already highlighted a lack of academies for cue starlets in Britain.

But he also believes his sport has the type of extra thinking and tactics that might lack the wham-bam appeal of the oche.

O'Sullivan, who is chasing a record eighth world crown this week, said: "With snooker, there's so many in-between shots, there's so much to learn, there's so much safety.

"In darts, once you get the action right, it should in theory go where you want.

"If you make it to the final here, you’re playing one match for maybe around 10 hours. Whereas in darts, you’re only playing for maybe an hour to two hours. It’s really different.”

    Judd Trump 8-8 Jak Jones

Century break of 117! It's difficult to describe just how difficult and important that frame was for the Welshman. Huge having found himself behind to the world number two.

We started the night at 4-4… we end the evening at 8-8. Judd Trump and Jak Jones cannot be separated after two sessions of extremely tactical and hard-fought snooker at the Crucible Theatre.

These two will come back tomorrow morning for the third and final session. What's the betting we find ourselves at 12-12 in a final-frame decider?

    Judd Trump 8-7 Jak Jones

Oh my. That's fantastic stuff. He potted the pink to leave himself with an extremely awkward red along the bottom cushion. He sizes it up and sinks it right in the heart of the pocket. This should be 8-8 and that's the least he deserves.

    Judd Trump 8-7 Jak Jones

Big moment coming up here. One last simple red and pink to take Jones into a 49-0 lead, but that cluster of reds will need to be tackled. This could be the key to the final frame...

    Judd Trump 8-7 Jak Jones

What a piece of cueing that is. Jones steps back to the table and makes a massive pressure shot to give himself the chance to restore parity. Just needs to keep tight control of that cueball.

    Judd Trump 8-7 Jak Jones

Typical of this match. Jak Jones sinks a fantastic long red but leaves himself completely out of position after potting the black. That was a good chance that but he has to return to the baulk cushion with the white.

    Judd Trump 8-7 Jak Jones

It's been a tough old night, but Judd Trump has himself in the lead. I think I'm right in saying that's the first time he's had his head in front since… yes, since winning the very first frame of the match.

    Judd Trump 7-7 Jak Jones

So we've got Trump ahead 49-8. There's still plenty of points available with seven reds left on the table but the black is tied up. A high-quality safety battle in progress, folks.

    Judd Trump 7-7 Jak Jones

Trump's break ends at 41, and Jak Jones asks the referee if he can take a bathroom break mid-frame. Everyone in the crowd takes the opportunity to stand up and stretch out - I don't blame them - this has been a long old session indeed.

    Judd Trump 7-7 Jak Jones

Bit of a horror show for Jak Jones there. He attempts to clip the red and get the cueball back up to the other end of the table but he misses it completely and smashes into the bunch.

That's handed Trump the frame on a plate. Alright, not on a plate… you know what I mean.

    Judd Trump 7-7 Jak Jones

What. A. Pot. Somehow Jak Jones stuns the red the entire length of the table to the top left-hand pocket and leave himself in a beautiful position on the black. He goes for the exact same shot moments later, but the ball wobbles in the jaw before being spat out.

Judd Trump tidies up but will need to go into the cluster of reds before we know where this frame's heading.

    Judd Trump 7-7 Jak Jones

And that's the frame. These two simply cannot be separated. Jones has a real look of anguish after that one, twice had good opportunities to put it to bed and guarantee himself at least parity overnight - but it's level with two left to play.

Steve Davis: "It feels like it's going to be 8-8. Of course it could just as easy be 9-7 either way, but it feels like we're in for a grandstand finish.

"It doesn't feel like somebody's going to run away with this match, even in the last session when the stakes will be raised a bit."

    Judd Trump 6-7 Jak Jones

Right, we've got Trump back at the table after a miss from his opponent and he's quickly raced into a healthy lead. Just needs a red and black to get to snookers required…

    Judd Trump 6-7 Jak Jones

What can he do with this… not much as it happens. After a few magnificent shots, he can't get the pink to drop in that pesky middle pocket. They really are unforgiving.

It's allowed Judd Trump back to the table… but he misses the pink and then pots the white! Honestly, you couldn't write it.
