There's a little strip mall on Fowler Avenue where you can buy medical marijuana, eat a spicy chicken sandwich and then browse used books and vinyl all in one stop.
It's a remarkable strip mall roster (and we'll talk about it more further down the story), but it begs the question, are there other strip malls in Tampa Bay with lineups this strong?
Whether you just moved here, or you're a season resident, you've probably noticed that Tampa Bay is home to an insane amount of strip malls and open-air shopping plazas.
There's a few reasons for this: experts point to factors like post WWII population growth,the decline of centralized urban centers in the 1950s, single-use zoning, setback requirements, unbridled urban sprawl,lack of public transportation, etc.
But one thing is certain, they're not going anywhere, and some of them are actually good.
While its easy to complain about these giant slabs of suburban concert and capitalism, it's also important to point out that many of them are home to diverse, and locally-owned businesses. And, these spaces often offer aneasier way for small businesses to get their first shot at a brick-and-mortar operation.
So, what follows is a few of our favorites. Consider this an ode to the best Tampa Bay strip mall lineups.
Sure, some of them are huge, some of them are tiny, but all of these strip malls made the cut because for whatever reason, we end up end up there again and again, every single weekend.

Britton Plaza
Plaza Roster Highlights: Play it Again Sports, Tapper Pub, Burlington, Publix, Tampa Buffett
Though it's a shell of its former self, Britton Plaza is still one of Tampa's most iconic shopping centers. Sure, the Plaza 8 movie theater was converted into a mega church, and Big Lots, Stein Mart, and Tuesday Morning have all packed up and left. But the 30-acre plaza still has some worthy tenants like Tapper Pub, a decent BCF and the area's best Taco Bell.

Park Plaza
Plaza Roster Highlights: MD Oriental Market, Hibachi Buffet, Kung Fu Tea & Token Ramen, Five Bucks Drinkery, Kogi Grill, CSL Plasma
There's a ton of strip malls in Pinellas Park, but if you had to choose just one, this would probably be it. Not only is Park Plaza home to the best MD Oriental Market in Tampa Bay, but it also sports a new Five Bucks Drinkery outpost, a ramen spot, a hibachi place AND you can donate plasma if you're low on cash. Plus, you also have Fray's Donut House across the street. This is easily the city hall of Pinellas Park.

Walter's Crossing
Plaza Roster Highlights: Target, Homegoods, Nordstrom Rack, Burlington, Ulta, Total Wine, Petsmart, Home Depot
On one hand Walter's Crossing is home to the area's worst parking garage (people mysteriously forget how to drive in there and the bottom floor is where dog's like to pee), but on the other hand it's gotten better over the years. For example, when Whole Foods left to Midtown and was replaced with a BCF, Walter's Crossing got a major glow up. Plus, it's hard to be mad at a Target-adjacent Nordstrom Rack and a Total Wine.

Causeway Plaza
Plaza Roster Highlights: Madison Avenue Pizza, Cricketers British Pub & Restaurant, Benedict's Restaurant, Happy Cactus Mexican Cocina, M&W European Deli and Market, Sandbar Grill
As you head out to Honeymoon Island, don't miss this massive sleeper of a strip mall in Dunedin. The Causeway Plaza is home to a few institutional businesses like Madison Avenue, Cricketers and Benedicts to name a few. But it also has a bike shop, a thrift store and a bingo hall.

Fowler Strip Mall
Plaza Roster Highlights: Mojo Books and Music, Surterra, Chipotle, Dave's Hot Chicken,Little Greek, Chewy's
Located in the shadow of the much larger and busier University Collection plaza on Fowler, this plaza is basically designed for college kids. For example, a person could pull in, purchase some medical marijuana from Surterra, browse for books and vinyl at Mojo's, and end their little shopping jaunt with a snack from either Dave's, Chipotle, Little Greek or Chewy's. You could truly really spend a full afternoon up in here.

University Plaza
Plaza Roster Highlights: Target, Bagel Plus, Aldi's, Hooter's, Ross, Hibbett Sports, Flaming Mountain Chinese, Keke's, a liquor store
Come for the the Target, and stay for the amenities. This gigantic patch of concrete along Fletcher has a gilded lineup of shops, and the sign out front does not do it justice. Yeah, there's a Target, and an Aldi's, and you can "Floss For Less" at Ross, but the real star is Bagel Plus, which is one of Tampa's best bagel stops. Also, Flaming Mountain is a true Tampa hidden gem.

Cross Creek Center
Plaza Roster Highlights: Gorkhali Kitchen, Fire Up Halal Grill, Cantina Mexican Grill & Bar, Hello Sweetness, Kiran Indian Grocery
There's some serious gems hidden in New Tampa, and Cross Creek Center is home to a few. The most famous of which is probably Nepalese restaurant Gorkhali Kitchen, which earned a Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand in 2023. Not to mention Fire Up Halal, a solid Indian grocery store and Cantina Mexican Grill & Bar are all neighbors in this tiny but mighty plaza.

Terrace Oaks Plaza
Plaza Roster Highlights: Yum Yum Hot Pot, Loli's, Saigon Bay, Fire Up Halal Grill, Roasted, Jerusalem International Market, Melt in Dip
Temple Terrace is more than just people posting about missing goats and kangaroos, it also has some great restaurants. Located in the heart of the Temple Terrace "Dining District," Terrace Oaks has a few local favorites stacked right next to each other. You got the area's only conveyor belt hot pot joint, a local fav with Saigon Bay, a Loli's, and the plaza also plays host to the massively popular Suhoor Night.

Northdale Promenade
Plaza Roster Highlights: Asiatic Thai-Sushi, bb.q Chicken, Capriotti's Sandwich Shop, Wok On By, Crumbl Cookies, T.J. Maxx, Beef 'O' Brady's, Winn Dixie
Lot of Tampa folks end up over here because of the nearby Whole Foods, but this massive plaza is worth the drive. For starters, one of the best Korean fried chicken spots is here is over here. Plus you got Capriotti's, Asiatic and Wok On By all within a short walk of each other.

University Collection
Plaza Roster Highlights: Sweet Buns, Taj Indian Cuisine, Pho Quyen, Lan Zhou Lamen Noodle House, Ichiban Japanese Cuisine, Chicken Salad Chick, Five Guys
Haters will hate on this area for a multitude of reasons, but this plaza is arguably the epicenter of the Uptown area of Fowler, and it also has a powerhouse collection of Asian restaurants (like Taj Indian Cuisine, Pho Quyen and Tampa literal first sushi spot Ichiban). Plus there's a Winn-Dixie, a Chili's, a used video game store, and K-Deli is right around the corner.

Bayshore Plaza
Plaza Roster Highlights: BT To Go, Yoko's Japanese Restaurant, The Mediterranean Chickpea
Bayshore Plaza is essentially the lunch district of Palma Ceia. In one tiny strip mall you got a quick service bahn mi spot, a sushi and ramen joint, and a quick service falafel counter all within a few feet of each other. Plus, soup and sammy hub Pane Rustica is just one plaza down.

The Graham Building in Seminole Heights
Plaza Roster Highlights: Mekenita Cantina, Gulf Coast Sourdough, Revolution Ice Cream Co.
In terms of size, this Tampa plaza is incredibly small but really packs it in. Mexican fare, a bakery and an ice cream parlor, all make up this Seminole Heights culinary trinity. Of course, first you have to find a spot in the sardine-sized parking lot. Bonus, you also have Wicked Oak barbecue just a few feet away.

The Fountain Shoppes at Temple Terrace
Plaza Roster Highlights: Jersey's Mikes, Starbucks, The Rocking Crab, Winn Dixie, Zen Noodle House
Yeah, it's got a busted fountain, rotten palm trees, and the developer is currently getting sued, but the Fountain Shoppes has a lot of potential. The "downtown" area of Temple Terrace already has one of the nicer Winn Dixies in the area and a Zen Noodle House, plus the "Shoppes" add a Jersey Mike's, a Starbucks and a Rocking Crab Seafood. There's also Gaspar's and Stefano's (two beloved local institutions) directly across the street.

Colony Crossings
Plaza Roster Highlights: Red, White and Blue Thrift Store, Tikka Masalaa Indian Cuisine, The Blend, Loli's, Rachel's Place, Three Brothers Pizza
Besides hosting one of the best thrift stores in Tampa Bay, Colony Crossings also has a solid coffee shop, a dive bar, a pizza spot and a Loli's. Pro Tip: If you show your Red White and Blue receipt at Loli's you can knock 20% off your order. Love to see a plaza come together.

Carrollwood Village Shoppes
Plaza Roster Highlights: Haveli Indian Kitchen, Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, Side Splitters Comedy Club, D’Lites Ice Cream, Maple Street Biscuit Company
Located in the heart of Carrollwood, this plaza is a full day of suburban errands. First of all, for a chain, Anthony's slays, and this location is probably one of the better ones in in the Tampa area. Then you can Haveli Indian, a comedy club, an ice cream shop, and more.

The Shoppes of Kenwood
Plaza Roster Highlights: Cider Press Vegan Gastropub, Gateway Subs, The Study Wine & Beer Lounge, Creative Grape
The former Georgie's Alibi building now is home to a few St. Pete favs. Vegan hots pot Cider Press calls this strip mall home, and so does local sammy favorite Gateway Subs. Plus, there's TWO wine and beer stops. Cheers to that!

Regency Square
Plaza Roster Highlights: AMC Regency 20, Old Navy, Kobe Japanese Steakhouse, T.J. Maxx, Barnes and Noble, Tesla Charging Stations, Five Below
All roads in Brandon lead to this giant parking lot. It's true, most Brandon residents will admit that they've burned at least one entire Saturday in this plaza. Regency Square has a movie theater, a Kobe's, and a tone of retail options like T.J. Maxx, Marshals and Shoe Carnival. It truly is a great place to experience a sunrise to sunset existential crisis.

Midtown Tampa
Plaza Roster Highlights: Sunda New Asian, Ponte Modern American, Whole Foods, True Food Kitchen, REI, Sal Y Mar, Shake Shack
Not to anger any residents that call this highway-adjacent development home, but Midtown is by. definition a shopping plaza. The lineup is solid, too. Besides anchor stores like REI and Whole Foods, the rest of this complex hosts some of Tampa's hottest restaurants, like Sunda, Ponte and Sal Y Mar. It also gets points for having Tampa's only Shake Shack.

Woodlands Square
Plaza Roster Highlights: Craft Street Kitchen, AMC Theaters, Mandola’s, Shaker and Peel, Ulta, Five Below, Marshalls, Country Pizza Italian Grill, Dollar Tree
Of course, an Oldsmar strip mall has to be on this list, and without a doubt the strippiest, strip mall on this side of the Bay is Woodlands Square. This big box empire comes complete with a theatre, multiple dollar/discount stores and few solid local eateries. Shaker and Peel alone is worth the trip, and while you're there you should check out Craft Street and Mandolas.

Town 'N' Country Plaza
Plaza Roster Highlights: SaRiOne B.B.Q, Mr. Empanada, Big Lots, Pit Stop Pub, T.J. Maxx
SaRiOne and Mr. Empanada are strong enough to get this plaza on the list. But this strip mall also has a good little dive bar, a T.J. Maxx and roller skating haven Skateworld of Tampa is right across the street.
