The UK cosmetics industry faces challenges as their product packaging are prone to contamination and often contain hazardous substances. An average moisturiser pot can take nearly 450 years to fully decompose. These products often involve multiple layers of packaging materials such as plastic wrappings, paper inserts, cardboard sleeves, foam, mirrored glass, and other components, sometimes all put together in a single purchase making recycling and sustainable waste management more challenging. But 'what iff' cosmetic waste got a makeover?

🚨 Using paper over plastic is not as environmentally friendly as commonly believed 🚨 Paper production destroys trees, emits more CO2, and consumes more water than plastic production 🌲 Additionally, 'paper' packaging often requires a plastic layer for effective food protection, making it difficult to recycle due to the combination of materials. The misguided push to eliminate plastic leads to higher CO2 emissions and overlooks the fact that plastic, when responsibly recycled like paper, glass, and aluminum, offers the best overall environmental solution ♻Europe has advanced recycling systems, while investment in recycling infrastructure is needed globally. Major food brands should not succumb to anti-plastic sentiments but recognise the value of plastic as a circular resource. Blaming plastics is misplaced, and instead, we should cherish and recycle them. #recycling #valueplastic #sustainablesolutions #climatechange

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) of 2022/0396 marks a significant stride in reshaping Europe's approach to single-use packaging, steering it towards a more sustainable, circular model. The recent vote concluded the phase of assessing and solidifying official positions of EU government bodies, setting the stage for forthcoming legislative dialogues in the upcoming year.Key Highlights:Recyclability Criteria (Article 6): Outlines design requirements by 2030 and defines "at scale" recycling by 2035.Recycled Content Targets (Article 7): Sets ambitious targets for high recycled content by 2030 and 2040 across various packaging categories.Compostability Criteria (Article 8): Defines criteria for compostable packaging.Restrictions on Packaging Formats (Article 22): Restricts certain single-use plastic packaging formats but allows exemptions.Re-use & Refill Targets (Article 26): Defines targets for re-use and refill in various packaging segments, potentially with exemptions.Prevention Targets (Article 38): Sets targets for packaging waste and plastic packaging waste prevention by 2030, 2035, and 2040.Free Tap Water in Restaurants (Article 38): Europeans might gain the right to request free tap water in restaurants.Separate Collection for Recycling (Article 43): Sets a target of 90% separate collection for recycling of all packaging.Specific Targets for Plastic Bottles and Cans (Article 44): Establishes separate collection and deposit return systems for plastic beverage bottles and cans.Recycling Rate Targets (Article 46): Re-establishes recycling rate targets for various packaging materials by 2030 and 2040.These measures aim to improve how easily materials can be recycled, increase the use of recycled materials, regulate compostable packaging, limit certain packaging types, encourage reusing and refilling, set goals to reduce waste, establish targets for separate collection, and determine recycling rates for various packaging materials.#policy #sustainability #sustainabilityleadership #singleuseplastics #europe #reusablepackaging #reuse #circulareconomy #circularity #circular

Are you wishcycling?...Understanding what can and can't be recycled from your food shop is key to reducing waste and protecting our planet. Check out this insightful article breaking down what goes in and what stays out of your recycling bin. ♻️🌱With spring around the corner, it's the perfect time to dive into those forgotten corners of our homes, including our recycling habits. Research shows that 8 out of 10 households are still unsure about proper recycling practices. Let's change that! There is a major hurdle: the lack of standardization in recycling processes. This leads to confusion among consumers and perpetuates low recycling rates. But fear not! We can tackle this by educating ourselves. From paper and card to glass, metal, and plastics, the article lays out clear guidelines. Remember to clean your recyclables to avoid contamination. For example, while glass bottles and jars are easily recycled, broken glass or Pyrex dishes can't be added to the mix.Plastics can be particularly tricky. While many councils accept items like milk bottles and shampoo containers, certain plastics, like soft films and black plastics, may not be recyclable in your area. It's crucial to check your local waste collection guidelines. But let's not rely solely on recycling. Reducing and reusing should be our first priorities. Choose loose produce over plastic packaging when possible, and look out for refillable packaging-free options at supermarkets.Together, let's make informed choices to reduce our environmental impact. By understanding what can and can't be recycled, we can work towards a greener, more sustainable future.https://lnkd.in/eMv7c8Sn#sustainability #environment #future
